Heeft mijn Teckel een jas nodig?

Does my Dachshund need a coat?

on

Beer is now 5 years old, and when he was a puppy, he often shivered. It was inevitable, as he was 10 weeks old when he came to us, and that was in December! He had to go outside every fifteen minutes for potty training...we think he's traumatized by it, haha!

Winter is coming: freezing cold and freezing temperatures. This creates plenty of winter fun, which Dachshunds love. A question we regularly get from dog owners, as well as Dachshund owners, is: "Does my Dachshund need a coat ?" In other words: is my dog cold?

When Beer was about a year old, we noticed he started shivering whenever he stood still outside. We honestly thought he was excited and that was why he was shivering, but our vet told us otherwise:

In general, small dogs, including Dachshunds, don't handle the cold very well. This is due to their often short coats and low body fat. Dachshunds are low to the ground and get cold more easily than larger dogs. Knowing this, short-haired Dachshunds and Dachshunds with thin coats often get cold more easily than wire-haired or long-haired Dachshunds. Most small dogs show signs of the cold from 8°C onwards, and a jacket can be a good solution for your Dachshund! Read more about cold and large dogs here .

If you see your Dachshund shivering or feel cold, don't hesitate: YES! Your Dachshund needs a coat.

Dogs aren't like dress-up dolls, so we thought the idea of a jacket for our Dachshund was crazy. When we kept an eye on Bear, we noticed he was actually cold! Not when we went for a walk in the snow or when it was freezing, because then he was moving around. But when he had to wait outside for a while or went along in our old car (which takes a bit longer to warm up).

We went looking for a suitable jacket for Dachshunds, but that proved quite challenging! Their proportions are quite different from those of most small dogs, of course. After trying on a few jackets, we quickly concluded they weren't sturdy enough or didn't offer enough freedom of movement. Finally, most small dog jackets were often too short on the back for a Dachshund and too deep under the belly, causing them to pee in them. After a long search, we finally found the perfect Dachshund jacket: sturdy, waterproof, easy to put on and take off, and, if you get tired of the color, even reversible. We could go on and on about this beautiful Dachshund jacket because, besides not ruining the Dachshund's sturdy image, it's affordable and can be worn with a collar or harness.

Now, two years later, our collection has been expanded with jackets for every type of weather and occasion: rain, cold, as a fashion item, for cycling or in the camper.

As soon as we walk to the car, our Dachshund already knows that he has to put on his coat: he doesn't mind at all and when we go for a walk, he doesn't need to put it on.
