EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW (AND WHY YOUR DACHSHUND PUPPY WILL SOON BE IN CHARGE)
Is your Dachshund puppy coming home soon? Congratulations! But… good luck too 😉 Because let’s be honest: a Dachshund puppy is not just any dog. It’s a tiny dictator on short legs, with a long back, and an opinion about everything. This little sausage will soon take over your entire life with all its charisma. In a good way!
But are you feeling a bit overwhelmed and don't know what you need for your Dachshund puppy? Or have you been to a regular pet store and weren't sure if all those products would suit your little dictator? We are here to help you!
In this blog, 'What do I need for my Dachshund puppy,' we’ll show you our top 14 (yes, that many!) most useful products you’ll need for a good start. Whether you visit us in-store or order them here in the webshop.
1. Dachshund puppy harness (start here!)
We start immediately with the most important one. Because we hear the phrase "I'll wait until my puppy is older..." far too often, and we say: don't do that! ⛔ This phase is crucial.
Our Dachshund puppy harness set ensures you have everything perfectly arranged in one go. No separate purchases, no doubt about what you need — just a complete basic set from day 1.
You get an H-harness, a collar, and a leash that are perfectly coordinated. And that's not just for show. You use the harness for walks and puppy training. This is the foundation: it relieves pressure on the neck and supports your Dachshund puppy's body correctly. Especially during this growth phase, you want everything to fit well.
The collar, on the other hand, is handy for quick moments. A quick trip outside, a quick pee: then a collar is often just a bit easier and quicker to grab.
And then the leash: it has exactly the right length for the initial phase. Ideal for training, puppy classes, and learning to heel. Not too long, not too short: just right.
Everything in this set is coordinated and grows with your puppy up to approximately 8 months. That means: less hassle, fewer bad purchases, and simply a good start for your Dachshund pup!
2. A good sleeping spot at home
If there's one place your Dachshund puppy will spend a lot of time, it's their sleeping spot. And just as you wouldn't want to sleep without a good mattress, the same applies to your Dachshund. Especially in the first few months, when their body is developing rapidly, and they sleep a lot, a good foundation is essential.
This body-conforming cushion does exactly what you want: it conforms to your Dachshund puppy's body and supports their back and neck in all the right places and from all sides.
Thanks to the body-conforming filling, your pup will always lie comfortably. Whether they're curled up, stretched out, or "parked" with their head somewhere (because yes, they are Dachshunds 😉). Consider this cushion as the therapeutic foundation at home. The place where your pup can truly relax and where their body is well supported. And later on, too, of course.
Of course, you can still place extra beds or blankets throughout the house, we do that ourselves. But this is the spot your Dachshund should always be able to rely on.
3. The nest you take everywhere
Dachshunds and nests… that’s just true love. A blanket or a cushion and they disappear. Completely. So why not give them something that perfectly fits that?
The Dachshund sleeping bag is their safe haven. At home on the couch, but especially on the go. Because a puppy often finds new places exciting: and it helps enormously if they have their own nest with them. Even better: leave the sleeping bag with the breeder for that familiar scent.
In the car, Dachshunds snuggle into it, on a terrace they have their own spot, and when visiting somewhere, they immediately feel more at ease. It's recognizable, warm, and smells familiar. You just carry the sleeping bag under your arm and you're good to go. Wherever you are, your pup always has their own little home with them.
And believe us: once they get used to it… they won't want to lie anywhere else.
4. Car cushion and travel bed in 1
This is one of those items you want to have in your car as standard: the Dachshund car cushion/travel bed. Your Dachshund puppy immediately has its own fixed spot while driving. The soft filling and raised edges provide security, making your pup lie more calmly on the road. And perhaps even more importantly: safe transport.
It comes with a built-in seatbelt attachment, allowing you to safely secure your pup to their harness (never a collar!). This keeps them in place without putting pressure on their neck, should anything happen on the road.
For extra comfort, place the sleeping bag mentioned earlier inside, so your pup always has a warm and familiar nest with them. At your destination, you simply use the cushion as a bed. One place, to take everywhere. And: safety first!
5. Car seatbelt: safety first!
We get it: having your pup loose in the car seems fun, until you suddenly have to brake. Haven't thought about it yet? Maybe now's a good time!
Too many customers are still unaware of what happens to their dog in such a case. With a car seatbelt, you ensure your Dachshund puppy stays safely in place. You click it onto the harness (never a collar) so your pup can never move through the car.
Have you already chosen the car cushion? Then a standard car seatbelt is already included. But if you don't choose this, always go for this car seatbelt! Combine this with a car cushion or sleeping bag and you have a safe and calm place in the car.
6. A chew bone (for your wrecking ball)
It's a fact that your Dachshund pup will chew on everything. It's even important! Okay, preferably not on chair legs or your shoes, of course.
Especially during teething, puppies need to gnaw. But… without a good alternative, they often choose something themselves. Like your chair legs. Or your shoes.
We often see owners only punishing what their pup shouldn't do. But did you know that 'replacing' it with something your Dachshund pup IS allowed to chew on works even better? That's where the coffee chew bone comes in.
This chew root made from coffee wood is super sturdy, completely natural, and free from additives. While chewing, small, soft fibers are released (no sharp splinters), making it safe for your pup. It helps clean teeth, reduces plaque, and gives your Dachshund puppy an outlet for their chewing instinct. A win-win situation.
Important: always let your pup chew under supervision. Dachshunds are wrecking balls and can get really into it 😉 completely obsessive? Just take the Dachshund chew bone away for a bit.
7. Toys (and the fox that IS allowed to come home)
We didn't just pick this flying fox as the ultimate Dachshund toy! No, it’s even perfect as a first toy for your Dachshund puppy, because you can already take it to the nest. Let the toy lie there for a while, so it absorbs the scent. Then take your pup home with the fox, and they'll immediately have something familiar with them, which helps enormously in those first few days.
This Dachshund toy stimulates the senses with its different textures (hello soft cuddly rag!) and sounds (soft rustling tail AND fox sound as soon as it flies!). If you thought we had everything, it's also just a super cute toy. Can you already see your Dachshund puppy walking around with a fox in its mouth? We can!
Playing, discovering, and a piece of recognition all in one.
8. A puppy carrier
Of course, you want to take your Dachshund puppy everywhere, but they can't walk far yet!
This puppy carrierk is perfect for the first few months and short distances. Your pup is close to you, feels safe, and isn't overexerted. At the same time, you immediately have a kind of blanket and nest in one.
Is your pup still very small? Just put an extra cushion or cloth in for some extra height and support. As your pup grows and gets heavier, you switch to a carrier bag with a sturdy bottom (see 9). But for now: this is exactly what you need in that first phase.
9. A Dachshund carrier bag (travel home)
While a sling carrier is perfect for the first few months, a Dachshund carrier bag is the next step, or something you might choose right away if you want to get it right from the start.
The difference lies in the sturdy bottom. This means your Dachshund puppy isn't "hanging in a bag" but is truly stable and supported, with a straight back. This provides more stability, especially during longer journeys.
In addition, a Dachshund carrier bag truly feels like a little home. A place where your pup can retreat, take a nap, or just calmly observe everything around them if it all gets a bit too much. On a terrace, in a restaurant, visiting friends, or on the go: your Dachshund always has their own spot with them. And that makes new situations much less daunting.
10. Snacks: indispensable in the puppy phase!
Reward, reward, reward. In the puppy phase, you spend a lot of time rewarding. Whether you're at puppy class, walking outside, or just want to reinforce good behavior: snacks are the ultimate tool. And believe us: a Dachshund listens just a little better when there's something in it for them 😉 (we said 'just a little'... usually they just don't listen).
Preferably choose 100% natural snacks, without unnecessary additives. In this phase, you don't want "junk," but something your pup responds well to and that fits a healthy diet.
For training, snacks like beef lung are ideal. You can easily break them into very small pieces and carry them in your treat pouch (see next, point 11). This way, you always have something on hand to reward, wherever you are.
Want to keep your pup busy for a bit longer? Then chew snacks like a bully stick are perfect. They provide distraction, relaxation, and simultaneously help with chewing needs. In short: small for training, larger for entertainment, but always natural.
11. Poop bag and snack pouch in one
You always forget them… just when you walk outside… and you don't have any snacks. Or no poop bags. Or both.
With this combo bag, that problem is solved. Everything neatly together and always within reach. You simply clip it to your belt or bag and you're done.
For training and walks, this is a must-have. Especially in the puppy phase, where you constantly want to be able to reward. In addition, the bag is handmade from leather and perfectly matched to our harnesses and leashes. So not only practical, but also a beautiful match for the rest of your set.
12. Water for on the go
Just like snacks and poop bags... you also always forget the water. With this waterproof water bottle, you no longer have that problem. It's a bottle and drinking bowl in one, so you don't need separate bowls anymore. Just fill, take it with you, and you're good to go.
You can easily clip it to your belt or bag, so you always have water on hand. Ideal during walks, on a terrace, or on the go. And perhaps most importantly: it doesn't leak. Practical, sturdy, and beautifully designed!
13. Travel food bowl, also for on the go!
Once you're on the go with your Dachshund puppy, you'll naturally need to bring food. Puppies are also fed more often throughout the day, so a travel food bowl, matching the water bottle, is ideal.
You can click these travel food bowls together and seal them. This makes it easy to take food with you, without having to carry it separately. Also handy if you take fresh meat or wet food with you.
Once at your destination, you separate them and immediately have two bowls: one for food and one for water. They take up little space because they are foldable, are lightweight, and super practical for on the go, a day trip, or vacation.
14. Dachshund coat (can also be the most important!)
We put it last, but honestly: depending on the season, this can also be the most important thing: the Dachshund coat!
Dachshunds are sensitive to cold and rain, especially puppies. They don't have a fully grown coat yet and are even lower to the ground than adult Dachshunds. A good Dachshund coat ensures your pup stays warm and dry, without restricting movement.
Our coats are adjustable and grow with your Dachshund puppy for a while. It won't stay the same size for the entire puppy phase, but you can use it for some time. And that makes it a fine and practical choice even for puppies.
Which coat you choose depends on the season. For rain and mild weather, a lighter variant is perfect, while in winter you want some extra warmth. So always check which coat suits your situation: that way you can be sure your pup is always protected from cold and wet weather.
