The ultimate bike seat for Dachshunds: the Buddyrider!
Does your Dachshund whine in the bike trailer? Bark when your partner cycles by? Or does a regular dog basket put too much weight on your handlebars? Then the Buddyrider is the bike seat for your Dachshund that will make your rides (and your Dachshund’s) a whole lot more fun! And we can already tell you: it’s a completely different experience than what you’re used to. No more wobbling handlebars or constant whining from the trailer: this dog bike seat is attached to your seat post rather than the handlebars. With this dog bike seat, you’ll both enjoy every ride. And let’s not forget the smiles from everyone you pass, charmed by the sight of your Dachshund’s ears happily flapping in the wind!

Why choose the Buddyrider as the bike seat for your Dachshund?
The Buddyrider was developed in Canada for dogs up to 12 kg. We’ve been selling the Buddyrider for over four years now, and we can say with confidence that all Dachshunds up to 12 kg fit perfectly. That’s basically all Dachshunds, since most don’t weigh more than 12 kg. For reference: Bear, the brown wire-haired Dachshund in the product photos, weighs 12 kg. Frits, the blond long-haired one, weighs 5 kg.
This bike seat for your Dachshund is attached to the seat post, so there’s no weight on your handlebars. That means safer, more stable cycling. Plus, your Dachshund sits right in front of you, so you can keep in contact the whole time. Dogs stay calmer because you can comfort them, they whine less, and they enjoy being close. Your Dachshund gets to watch the world go by right along with you.
While riding, your Dachshund can choose to stand with their paws on the platform or lie down. In both positions, their back stays straight. Something we think is very important for a Dachshund’s sensitive spine! Thanks to the backrest and adjustable safety harness, your dog is always safely secured.
How does the Buddyrider work?
You’ll receive the Buddyrider as a complete package. That includes the bike seat, soft foam pad, seat post mount/receiver, safety pin, and harness. The seat weighs around 2 kg, but thanks to its smart attachment to the seat post, you won’t notice it while riding. The Buddyrider ensures balanced weight distribution and a stable ride.
Mounting is simple and clearly explained in the included manual. Once installed, just slide the seat into the mount and secure it with the pin. Not using the Buddyrider? Just leave the mount on your bike: it won’t get in the way. No need to keep attaching and detaching it. The mount is also available separately. Ideal if you want to install it on multiple bikes. That way, you don’t need to remove it each time. Perfect for when you’re cycling together and want to switch mid-ride!
Will the Buddyrider fit my bike?
In most cases, yes — but we always recommend measuring your bike using the information below. That way, you’ll know for sure whether this bike seat for your Dachshund is a match for your setup! Take a look at the image to see exactly what to measure on your bike. Your bike needs:
- Minimum of 48,5 cm between seat post and handlebar;
- Minimum of 4,5 of straight seat post section.

Please note! The Buddyrider cannot be mounted on a carbon seat post, a fully suspension seat post or a seat post that points straight upward.
You need at least 48.5 cm of space between the seat post and the handlebar, so the seat fits between your saddle and handlebar. The straight part of the seat post on your bike must be at least 4.5 centimetres: only then will the receiver fit on your seat post. Does your bike have a fully suspension seat post? Then you need to replace it with a fixed one; the Buddyrider cannot be mounted on a suspension seat post. A fixed seat post can usually be found at any bike shop or online. Does your bike have a partially suspension seat post? Then it’s possible to mount the receiver on the non-suspension part, as long as that section is also at least 4.5 cm.
Also important to know: make sure your saddle is adjusted so that you can reach the ground with both feet when mounting and stopping. Since you're stepping on your bike like a man, this is especially important for women. Normally, your saddle is set at hip height, but please double check to be sure. This is the only way to use this bike seat with your Dachshund safely.
This latest version of the Buddyrider has a rotating component under the platform. This allows you to adjust the platform to the desired height. It can be useful, for example, if you have an electric bike with a display, or a high handlebar. It’s also worth testing which height your Dachshund finds most comfortable. Besides the rotating knob for height adjustment, you can also move the Buddyrider forwards or backwards using the screws underneath the seat.
Is this dog seat suitable for my Dachshund puppy?
Yes, absolutely! You can’t start too early. We recommend starting from around 3 to 4 months of age. It’s important that your Dachshund puppy is already able to balance itself a bit. Start slowly with the bike seat for Dachshund: take a short ride, get used to the seat together, offer comfort and reward with a treat during or after the ride. Build it up gradually and don’t force anything. That way, the experience stays positive! At a young age, they adapt quickly to new things and it will soon feel completely normal: cycling together!
